(CBS DETROIT) – Video shows contractors demolishing the Northville Downs clubhouse after the horse racing track closed earlier this year.

“A large excavator with industrial shears is cutting through the vertical steel beams of the Downs clubhouse, knocking down dangling debris as well,” the city of Northville said in a social media post Monday morning.

While the contractors were working on the building, water was sprayed from a fogger to keep the dust at bay.

According to city officials, the canopy is the last part of the building to be demolished, with its removal scheduled for July 13.

This update comes as residents expressed concerns about a recent oil spill at the site which the city had said was caused by demolition. Some of the spill had entered the Rouge River.

In response, the city installed two booms to address the spill and hired a private contractor to clean up the mess.

Residents living in the area expressed concerns about the spill and Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell contacted the Environmental Protection AgencyThe organization’s regional manager has asked the agency to monitor the spill.

Dingell wrote in her letter that containment of the oil spill appears to be going well, but she requested measures to ensure that the oil spill would not pose risks to local residents or the environment.

“The city, the county and I have been in discussions with EGLE to ensure that we are taking all necessary steps to protect our residents,” Dingell said. “It is critical that the EPA is aware of this situation and monitors developments to ensure that this contamination does not pose a risk to the public or our environment.”
