Video shows funeral procession for ex-Indonesian governor, not a ‘protest for justice’

Images have been shared of the funeral procession of a deceased Indonesian provincial governor. It falsely claims to show people protesting the arrest of a man in an unrelated murder case. The video was filmed in eastern Indonesia’s Papua province in December 2023 – months before the man in the case was taken into custody.

“You will shudder!! The situation in the city of Cirebon, June 1, 2024, asking for justice based on the fifth principle,” read the Indonesian caption of a TikTok video posted on June 1, 2024.

The footage – viewed more than 535,000 times – shows a large crowd gathered on the road, with text that translates as: ‘In search of justice, no more victims, this is Cirebon, I am a Cirebonese, I do not understand. This is truly a protest for the late Vina and Eki and justice for Pegi.”

The message referred to Vina Dewi Arsita and Muhammad Rizky – a couple who were murdered in Cirebon, West Java, in August 2016. There was also mention of Pegi Setiawan, a man arrested over the killings on May 21, 2024, local media reported (archived link). He has denied any involvement.

AFP has previously debunked disinformation about the double murder case here.

Authorities said Pegi was on the initial list of 11 motorcycle gang members responsible for the killings (archived link).

Eight other members of the gang had already been convicted – seven of whom were sentenced to life in prison, while one was released in 2020 after serving four years of his eight-year sentence (archived link).

The same videos were shared here and here alongside a similar false claim on Facebook; and on YouTube here with over 4,000 views.

But the video shows a funeral procession in front Lucas Enembe — a former governor of Indonesia’s Papua province, who died in December 2023.

Funeral crowd

A Google reverse image search revealed that the clip was used in a report published by local media outlet Kontan on December 28, 2023 about Lukas’ funeral (archived link).

The scene in the fake clip can be seen after 20 seconds of the Kontan video.

The Indonesian text in the video read: “People paraded Enembe’s body from the airport to Jayapura Theological School for the funeral and then took it to Lukas Enembe’s private residence in Kota Tengah, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City, Papua .”

Local media reported that the crowd paraded Lukas’ body from Sentani airport to a theological school in the city (archived link).

Several elements in the Kontan video also confirm that the video was shot in Papua province – specifically the display board, the style of the bridge’s balustrades and the Horison Express Sentani building, a hotel in Papua province.

Lukas died of kidney failure on December 26, 2023 while serving an eight-year prison sentence for a graft conviction, local media reported (archived link).
