OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) — Several coastal towns in South Jersey were flooded after torrential rains overnight and early Sunday morning.
a flash flood warning was issued for Cape May, Atlantic and Cumberland counties until 11:30 a.m. Sunday. Thunderstorms dumped between 2 and 6 inches of rain along the coast overnight, according to meteorologist Andrew Kozak, and more storms and severe weather are forecast for Sunday afternoon and evening.
A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the entire Delaware Valley, much of New Jersey and New Castle County, Delaware until 7 p.m. There is an increased risk of severe weather throughout the area, or level 3 on a scale of five.
A video shared by photographer HughE Dillon with CBS News Philadelphia showed cars driving along a flooded North Essex Avenue in Margate early Sunday morning.
In a Facebook post, the city’s police urged motorists not to cross flooded roads and shared a list of flood-prone areas that motorists should avoid. “If you see barricades, do not drive past them,” Margate PD said.
A video shared on X (formerly Twitter) also showed the severity of the flooding in Ocean City, with a pickup truck driver seen pulling a partially submerged sedan out of a flooded road.
People were also seen paddleboarding along flooded streets in Ocean City.
In Sea Isle, breakfast and lunch restaurant Steak Out shared videos of flooded streets and sidewalks.
The main threats for Sunday night’s storms are damaging winds, heavy rain that could cause more flash flooding and an isolated tornado. Storms will arrive in the Lehigh Valley between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, Philadelphia between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and South Jersey between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM
