Voter turnout is down in Marion, Hamilton counties compared to 2020

Correction:AAn earlier version contained inaccurate information about Marion County turnout.

About 350,000 voters cast ballots in Marion County, according to county election officials.

The state’s most populous county recorded a turnout of about 53.8%, which is worse than 2020 but slightly better than 2016.

Official turnout numbers won’t become clear until provisional, overseas and military ballots are counted, but election officials don’t expect them to have a significant impact on Marion County’s turnout numbers.

Dan Goldblatt, a spokesman for the Marion County Clerk’s Office, said election officials were initially optimistic about turnout because of record early voting numbers. But on Election Day itself, voters “just didn’t come out,” he said.

“We will look at which groups have not come out,” he said. “How do we reach them? How do we say: your voice matters.”

Turnout numbers were much higher in the Hamilton County suburbs. About 70.5% of voters were there. As in Marion County, that is lower than 2020, but higher than 2016.
