VP Harris supporters react to debate at Redwood City watch party

Supporters of Kamala Harris from San Mateo County gathered in Redwood City to watch the debate. Many said they were nervous about the debate, but ultimately walked out feeling confident.

Shikha Hamilton said she met Kamala Harris in 2009 and was immediately convinced that Harris had the qualities to reach the highest office in the land.

“I knew she was going to be president one day because she was brilliant. Not that she’s a woman and a woman of color, but she’s brilliant,” Hamilton said.

Since that day, Shikha has volunteered for every Harris campaign, so of course on this highly anticipated night, she knew she had to help organize a debate watch party.

“It will mean a lot to women across the country and I think the world when they see that her qualifications stand out above all else,” Hamilton said.

Shikha and dozens of other Harris supporters gathered at the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum for the 90-minute debate.

When the clock hit zero, most thought Harris had hit a home run.

“I thought it was interesting. It really shows that Trump can’t win, he’s not a good president here,” said Ryan Hecht, a high school senior from San Mateo.

“I think it would be great if people could connect with her because she’s more like a family member, a neighbor, someone we really care about. It would be a shame if someone who is so angry and so dependent on negativity got people’s trust,” said Diana Reddy, a Harris supporter.

Shikha told KPIX she was also proud of Harris’ accomplishment.

She believes the woman she met all those years ago exceeded her expectations.

“I was very nervous tonight, especially because there was so much pressure on her. But she showed that she is ready to be president. She absolutely won this debate,” Hamilton said.
