MONROE, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – The Monroe County Health Department has issued a warning for the entire beach water at Sterling State Park due to high levels of E. coli.
Health officials say water samples collected Tuesday found levels that exceed the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy water quality standard. Re-sampling continued Wednesday.
Monroe County said it will notify the public once the advisory is lifted.
Residents, visitors, and pets should not submerge themselves in water, drink the water, or enter the water with any abrasions or cuts. Anyone or their pets who have been exposed should immediately shower with soap and water and contact their doctor or veterinarian if the animals show symptoms.
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and dehydration. People may also experience respiratory infections and skin infections.
“Many factors can contribute to elevated levels of E. coli in surface water, including poorly functioning sewage systems, animal waste, storm runoff and wildlife,” said Chris Westover, Monroe County’s director of environmental health. “We want to remind everyone to follow water advisories to protect themselves and their families from disease-causing organisms.”
The province urged the following precautions to be taken:
- Avoid physical contact in areas where E. coli has been found.
- Do not allow pets to drink or play in the lake water.
- Be careful when eating fish from polluted waters.
- Do not water lawns or gardens where water collects.
