Warnings issued in Montana for dangerous heat wave

July 4 – A sweltering summer week is coming to western Montana as a “massive” ridge of high pressure takes hold of the northern Rockies.

The heat wave with dangerously hot conditions is set to sweep across the region this weekend, with triple digit temperatures possible by the middle of next week. An extreme heat warning is in effect for the Kootenai and Cabinet regions of far northwest Montana and the Lower Clark Fork region of Sanders and Mineral counties from July 9-13.

“The middle of next week looks set to be the warmest stretch, with valleys in central Idaho reaching temperatures of 100-115 degrees Fahrenheit and valleys in western Montana reaching temperatures of 90-106 degrees Fahrenheit next Wednesday,” the National Weather Service in Missoula warned in its forecast Thursday.

At night, temperatures cool to about 10 to 17 degrees Celsius, “making it difficult for people without air conditioning or other cooling to find relief.”

Libby could reach a high of 103 degrees during the heat wave. Missoula is also struggling with highs in the low 100s. Kalispell’s hottest days are July 10-13, with highs of 96 degrees.

Heat exhaustion or heat stroke are possible.

“This level of heat affects anyone who does not have effective cooling and/or adequate hydration,” the Meteorological Service warned, adding that infrastructure could also be affected.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on family members and neighbors,” the Weather Service continued. “Don’t leave young children and pets unattended in vehicles. Car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in minutes.”

There is a chance of thunderstorms again from next Thursday.
