ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced on Monday a new unit focused on reducing violent crime.

At an 11 a.m. news conference in St. Paul, the BCA is expected to provide details about the Violent Crime Reduction Unit, or VCRU, which is housed within the Investigations Division. CBS News Minnesota will stream this event live. Watch here or in the live player above.

The BCA says the new unit is a “specialist team ready to use its expertise and local partnerships to tackle the key drivers of violent crime: weapons, drugs and criminals wanted on high-value arrest warrants.”

Officials are expected to provide more information about the unit and share some of the success stories the unit has already seen this year.

There were several shootings in Minneapolis this weekend, including one left a woman and her child seriously injured on Sunday.

WCCO’s Esme Murphy investigates the new BCA unit, so check back for more details.
