Bears Hall of Famer Steve “Mongo” McMichael accepted his gold jacket on behalf of his wife Misty during the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Friday night.

McMichael was unable to travel to Canton, Ohio, for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony due to complications from ALS, a family spokesman said in a statement in early June.
“Steve McMichael is unable to travel to Canton, Ohio for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame due to complications from ALS, which he has battled so valiantly for the past three years,” the spokesman said. “The Hall of Fame is making plans to honor him at home. Steve and his family thank you for the fans’ continued support.”
McMichael, 66, has been battling ALS for three years. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2024 in February. He was a finalist in this year’s Seniors category, along with Randy Gradishar and Art Powell.
Each candidate was chosen individually by the selection committee. The Hall of Fame selections were announced during the NFL Honors. McMichael’s wife was also in Las Vegas to receive his selection.
The 50-person selection committee narrowed down the Senior Finalists from a pool of 12 seniors who are still eligible for next year’s class. Each Senior Finalist needed at least 80% approval to be accepted. Mongo got the votes.
Former Bears Devin Hester and Julius Peppers were elected to the Hall of Fame as part of the Modern Era group of players. They helped increase the Bears’ Hall of Famer count to 39, which led the league even before the trio were elected to Canton.
