It’s a bit incongruous to see a blue-blood American pony car prototype driving the nearly 13 miles of Germany’s most famous race track, but the new Mustang GTD is built differently. The GTD’s supercharged V8 targets uncharted territory for the modest Mustang; over 800 hp. In addition to the enormous power that Ford is aiming for with this special Mustang, the company also hopes to make it drive like a race car. While some special editions of the Mustang have done well in the past, the GTD will likely rival the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and that’s something no Mustang has ever done successfully.

At the Nürburgring, this pony slowly gallops around the track, which is a good starting place for a rear-wheel drive Mustang with more than 800 hp. To keep that herd of horses relatively under control, Ford equipped the GTD with the most advanced suspension ever fitted to a Mustang, and a transaxle to best balance this pony’s weight. As the GTD reaches the Nürburgring, you get a clear view of the transmission cooler that occupies the space where most Mustangs have a trunk. The two fans between the taillights help dissipate heat from the transaxle.

Nerdy stuff aside, the GTD’s exhaust note sounds like an opera singer gargling chainsaws, or a Kodiak bear having a full-blown nervous breakdown. It sounds really good, that’s what I’m trying to say. The Mustang GTD is available with a titanium Akrapovic exhaust, which it is unclear if this test mule has the exhaust, but if this is the stock exhaust, the titanium exhaust will shatter glass with its sounds. Even the induction sound is enticing, as the video captures the Mustang pulling into a corner and the engine and supercharger sucking air down, mixing it with fuel and exploding it in the most symphonic manner. Ah, the joys of internal combustion.

If you’re still reading this and you’re not yet in a trance-like state from the aural pleasure of the Mustang GTD’s exhaust note, I’m concerned for your well-being. Just hit play on the video and let the sonorous style of 800 supercharged horsepower take you to internal combustion engine heaven.
