Weird Warfare: Russian Turtle Tanks

As the war in Ukraine continues, both sides have evolved their war tactics, while what was once considered effective has proven otherwise. This will of course continue to happen, as in most wars, as the two sides escalate and jostle for position on the front. One of the strangest recent developments is the Russian ‘Turtle Tanks’.

A robot tank may soon come to the battlefield.

In certain areas, these Turtle Tanks are often T-72s with a makeshift shell or outer hull made of rebar, corrugated iron, or other materials welded together. It should help protect against the ubiquitous FPV drone attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces.

When these monstrosities first manifested, some praised the innovative nature of the Russian armed forces. They seemed to believe that these grenades would prevent the Ukrainian forces from destroying the tanks, giving the other side a significant advantage.

Only it didn’t turn out that way at all.

A major problem with the Turtle Tanks is that the shell limits the rotation of the weapon and the visibility of the crew. Ironically, that could make the tanks more vulnerable to attack. It’s just like during World War II some tanks were so heavily armored that they were slow and often got stuck, while the very thing that was supposed to protect the crew became a huge liability.

These tanks sometimes have rollers or plows on the front to activate enemy landmines. We saw similar tools used on US and allied armored vehicles way back during Desert Storm, so they’re not exactly cutting edge stuff.

But what’s interesting is a video shared by the official It is not clear exactly how that happened. It could be that Ukraine has the option to swap some mines to avoid the explosion, or that there is a delay, or perhaps some other innovation.

This just shows the arms race going on in the war in Ukraine. One side thinks it has the upper hand with a new toy and the other side shows that that may not be the case. That’s part of the reason why the fighting continues.
