Mason Fletcher of News Center 7 says the highlights of our vacation come from what’s inside these boxes. But once it’s opened and empty, what you do with that box is just as important.

“We’re going to see a lot of cardboard that doesn’t necessarily fit into their normal weekly shift. We are here to accept that cardboard,” said Dana Doll, manager of Greene County Environmental Services.

Cardboard is just one of four main priorities for Greene County Environmental Services.

Doll told Fletcher that the other three were string lights, lithium batteries and live Christmas trees.

‘Bring that whole Christmas tree to us. We’re going to recycle it into mulch, and you can come back and pick it up and put it on your lawn and landscape,” she said.

Doll added that those who participate have a positive impact on the entire state.

“Residents who participate contribute directly to the Ohio economy. This is a $1 billion industry,” she said.

Fletcher reports that the county is working with Rumpke on their collection. Molly Kennedy said the two biggest problems during the holidays are string lights and lithium batteries.

The wire from the string lights will clog the detangler and slow down their work.

The batteries could be causing a bigger problem.

“If a battery compacts and explodes, it’s in paper, cardboard and plastic things that can immediately be set on fire,” Kennedy said.

She told Fletcher it happened at a facility a few months ago.

Kennedy says customers who have too much material to fit in their bin shouldn’t just leave it on the curb.

“Call customer service and say, Hey guys, I have seven boxes. I have all this stuff, I can’t fit in. Where should I take it?” she explained.

Police tell Fletcher that breaking down large boxes can protect your home.

You can usually see what used to be there, such as a TV box.
