Two tram drivers will represent the West Midlands at the European Tram Driving Championships this weekend.
Jasbir Kaur from Wolverhampton and Dawid Osika from Wednesbury travel to Frankfurt, Germany, to show off their driving skills with events including performing emergency stops and accurately stopping trams.
The event was organised by TRAM-EM and first took place in 2012. Tram drivers from all over the world participate.
Mr Osika said he was looking forward to taking on the challenge and bringing victory home to the West Midlands.
“I have been working in the public transport sector for 12 years, but I love the trams,” said Mr Osika.
Ms Kaur wanted to make a career change and became a tram driver. She was looking forward to competing against other drivers from all over the world.
“When I found this job, I thought, this is the perfect job for me. It’s the best decision of my life and I love it.
“When I drive along the tracks and pick up people along the way, they appreciate you and I put a smile on people’s faces,” she said.
One of the most anticipated events is ‘tram bowling’, where drivers must skillfully push a 1.5 kg ball across the track between two marker posts.
Anthony Stanley, head of operations and safety at West Midlands Metro, said: “We are excited to see them compete against the best in Frankfurt,” Anthony added.
“Both have an excellent chance of taking home the title of European Tram Driver of the Year.”
The championship will take place on Saturday.
