WestJet union ends strike after reaching deal with airline

(Reuters) – The union representing striking mechanics at Canada’s WestJet Airlines said on Monday a contract has been negotiated with the airline, ending the strike immediately.

Westjet said members would return to work to restore the network after the airline was forced to park 130 planes at 13 airports in Canada. The airline said it expected further disruptions in the coming week as aircraft and crews are re-sited.

The union said the contract covers the next five years, without giving details of the new wage deal.

The airline canceled another 410 flights on Sunday, bringing the total to more than 800 flights, after the union representing about 680 WestJet workers, including aircraft maintenance technicians, went on strike on Friday after 97% of members rejected a wage deal reached in May.

“WestJet and AMFA have reached a tentative agreement as Canadians have run out of patience,” Canadian Labor Minister Seamus O’Regan said in a post on X.

The minister had called on the union and the airline to resolve their differences and reach an agreement.
