Cold weather means replacing the thermostat and using more energy, which can be costly for Louisville homeowners.
Although the official start of winter hasn’t arrived yet, the cold weather has. This year, Louisville has already seen several cases of snow.
Here’s what you need to know about setting your thermostat.
What is the best thermostat temperature in winter?
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting the thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter.
Ram Narayanamurthy, deputy director of the department’s Building Technologies Office, told USA TODAY that temperatures between 68 and 70 degrees are best to heat a home efficiently.
How can I save energy in winter?
The Energy Department said that to save even more energy, people can lower the temperature in their homes when they are sleeping or away.
Changing the temperature by 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day, in winter and summer, can save about 10% per year on heating and cooling, the department said.
This step to save money and energy is recommended if the forecast is moderate.

-
Invest in weather stripping and caulking to seal air leaks around doors and windows and in areas where pipes or wires come through cracks or holes in walls.
-
Check whether heating or air conditioning filters need to be cleaned or replaced.
-
Look for a product’s EnergyGuide label to see how much energy it uses and make comparisons with other options.
-
Use the energy assessment on smart meters or call in a professional for an energy assessment. The FTC said it’s important to check online to see if the company is trustworthy.
