If, as Tina Turner once sang, “you can’t stand the rain,” maybe you should stay inside on Saturday and sing along to her records. More rain is expected as a result of the nasty disturbance that has engulfed South Florida all week.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until 8 p.m. Saturday morning because the terrain is so saturated from about 20 inches of rain that has fallen in parts of Miami-Dade and Broward since Tuesday.
What the weekend forecast says
▪ Saturday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely throughout Saturday, with the best chances in the afternoon and evening hours, although South Florida still woke up to showers in the morning.
Think you can escape the wet weather on a day trip to the Keys? No. As of Saturday morning, no flood warnings have been issued for the island chain, but there is still a 60% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms on Saturday. Although rates drop to around 30% Sunday in the work week, the forecast remains for a few isolated storms and with easterly winds expected to strengthen Monday, small craft advisories are likely necessary, according to the weather service in Key West.
“While rainfall coverage and intensity are not expected to rival tropical rain showers earlier this week, additional rainfall of any amount over the East Coast metro areas could worsen currently saturated conditions,” agency meteorologists wrote Saturday morning in a news alert.
▪ Sunday: Rain chances drop to 40% on Sunday and the overnight forecast calls for 20% with northeasterly winds up to 13 miles per hour.
▪ Work week and Juneteenth: Monday looks like a 30% chance, but Tuesday it goes back to 50% and on Wednesday June there could be a few storms with wind gusts over 20 miles per hour. There are 70% storm chances on Thursday and Friday.
Areas under flood watch
Saturday’s flood watch for the east coast of Miami through the Fort Lauderdale areas includes these locations:
▪ Cities and monuments: Miami, Hialeah, Kendall, Kendale Lakes, Carol City, Royal Palm Ranger near Homestead, the Mahogany Hammock trail in the Everglades, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Deerfield Beach, Coral Springs, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Sunrise, Hollywood and Sawgrass Mills Mall.
The bright side? Clouds have kept temperatures in the 80s and another week of highs is expected in the mid 80s. And aren’t the painted sunsets in the sky and the occasional rainbow beautiful?
