What to Watch Before ‘Wolverine & Deadpool,’ Plus Where the New Marvel Movie Fits into the MCU and More

It’s time for the superhero crossover event of the decade (or at least since the last major Avengers movie came out): Wolverine and DeadpoolThe MCU’s first-ever R-rated film hits theaters this Friday, bringing more mutants from the X-Men series into the MCU — we first saw mutants in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the series Ms Marvel. Ryan Reynolds is back as NSFW Deadpool and Hugh Jackman has donned a new, more comic book-faithful variation of his Wolverine suit after we all feared Logan would mean the end for him, who was to play the beloved, grumpy character.

It’s certainly been a while since we last saw either of these guys (and even longer since we first saw them together), so in case you need a refresher on the MCU’s confusing chronological timeline, the X-Men universe, and which films you need to see before release, Wolverine and DeadpoolWe’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about Wolverine and Deadpoolincluding which characters make a cameo in the new film, whether you have to wait until the post-credits scene, and more.

According to the film’s director, Shawn Levy, you don’t have to need to do homework before you go to see Deadpool and Wolverine.

“I made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude for the fan base that knows the mythology and the lore of these characters and this world intimately. But I didn’t want to assume that,” Levy told the AP. “This film was made for entertainment, without the obligation to come prepared with any prior research.”

That said, if you want a refresher on these two characters before jumping into the chaos of their team-up, we’ve got you covered. Here’s what to watch before Deadpool and Wolverine to reacquaint ourselves with the dynamic duo.

If you want to know Wolverine’s origin story, you’ll probably want to watch X-Men Origin: Wolverine. The name pretty much says it all, plus you get an absolutely cursed first Deadpool sighting. You can watch Wolverine on Disney+ OR HBO’s Max.

Deadpool is back, this time with his own movie. The first Deadpool movie tells the origin story of Wade Wilson, from mercenary to mutant. Ryan Reynolds is in full Deadpool form for this film. You can also watch Deadpool on Disney+ and Max.

More relevant Death Pole lore, lots of fun, probably some familiar faces returning for the new movie. Also starring Josh Brolin (but not as Thanos). You can stream Deadpool2 on Disney+.

It sounds like Deadpool and Wolverine will deal with the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is introduced in the MCU in the first season of Loki. Additionally, the series was also the first to tackle the multiverse, notably in the episode “Journey Into Mystery.” Tom Hiddleston plays Loki in Lokiwhich is currently streaming on Disney+.

For a more multiverse crash course, consider rewatching Spider-Man: No Way Home. Thanks to a spell from Doctor Strange, things are getting a little messy with the multiverse in the latest Spider Man movie. No way home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch and some familiar faces from long ago in the franchise…

Unfortunately, due to licensing issues, Spider Man movies are not on Disney+ like the rest of the MCU. You can rent No way home yes on Amazon Prime Video.

In short, we don’t really know. It sounds like the MCU is finally bringing some X-Men characters into canon, but many of them will have to deal with The Void, and much of the film’s plot will take place in the TVA, which exists outside of space and time – how convenient for new fans who aren’t yet up to speed on the MCU timeline!

We do know that these iterations of Deadpool and Wolverine will be incorporated into the MCU canon with this film, which means the characters could appear in future Marvel films – set in the present, future, or even the past (probably).
