What we learned when the Giants surprised the Dodgers with Wisely’s walk-off homer

BOX SCORE

SAN FRANCISCO – Brett Wisely crushed a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Giants to a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park on Friday.

Matt Chapman and Luis Matos also helped the Giants (40-43) calm large groups of Dodgers fans (51-32) scattered throughout the stadium.

Wisely’s walk-off hit came moments after he hit a sharp line drive that was foul. Giants manager Bob Melvin disputed the call after some replay angles appeared to show the ball skidding off first baseman Freddie Freeman’s glove.

Referees reviewed the play and the decision was upheld. Two pitches later, Wisely hit his third home run of the season into the arcade above the brick wall in right field as Dodgers outfielder Jason Heyward turned and watched.

Camilo Doval (3-1) won despite a ninth-inning save that prevented Logan Webb from claiming the win. Heliot Ramos misplayed a fly ball to center field, allowing Andy Pages to advance to third. He scored on a Jason Heyward sacrifice fly to tie the game.

That ended the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak and marked just the third time in 14 games since September 2023 that San Francisco has defeated Los Angeles.

These are the conclusions from Friday’s match:

Webb bids farewell to a difficult month

Few people are as happy for June to come to an end as Webb.

The Giants ace pitched decently against the Dodgers on Friday, allowing five hits and two runs, with six strikeouts and three walks.

In five starts this month, Webb has been tagged for 13 runs in 33 innings (3.55 ERA), while allowing 32 hits with 30 strikeouts and six walks.

Not terrible numbers, but still lower than what fans expect from the right-hander.

On the plus side, Webb got through the first inning with ease, striking out Dodgers leadoff hitter Shohei Ohtani. Webb has struggled a lot in the first innings this season, so a 1-2-3 first was certainly an encouraging sign.

Feast or famine boys

Wisely’s home run was the Giants’ third of the game, continuing a week-long trend of the Orange-Blacks surging one day and falling silent the next.

San Francisco started the week with a multi-homer game against the Cubs on Monday, but got nothing the next day. On Wednesday, the Giants hit three more deep shots, another day with no home runs on Thursday.

The theme we hear every day continued on Friday when Matos Knack soloed in the fifth inning, then Chapman hit a two-run homerun off reliever Dan Hudson in the sixth.

Matos has been hitting a hot bat since coming off the Injured List last Saturday, and his home run was a continuation of that. Chapman’s home run was his 10e of the season, making Heliot Ramos the team leader.

Nsomething easy for Doval

Doval has brought back the Torture atmosphere to Oranje en Zwart.

The Giants’ closer, who has extreme difficulty pitching in situations where he can’t make saves, had a chance to decide the game Friday, but he gave up a triple to the first batter he faced when Ramos got the ball mishit, before Heyward hit the tying sacrifice fly to the next batter.

Doval settled in and got Miguel Rojas to ground out before Gavin Lux struck on an 90-mph slider.
