What you need to know about IUPUI’s new split, from academia to campus student life

The split between the shared campus of Indiana University and Purdue Indianapolis has been completed. This ends a years-long process to dissolve the 54-year partnership between Indiana’s top public universities.

What happened to IUPUI?

IUPUI will now be two separate schools: IU Indianapolis and Purdue Indianapolis. IU will continue to host most of its programs on the former IUPUI campus, while Purdue students will take classes with the same curriculum as students in West Lafayette, but with the opportunity to enroll in some IU Indianapolis electives.

Which programs belong to IU and which to Purdue?

IU will continue to offer all programs except engineering and computer science, which will become part of Purdue. Jay Gladden, interim executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer at IU Indianapolis, said IU will soon offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science through the Luddy School of Informatics on the Indianapolis campus.

What will happen to the current campus?

IU will continue to own and operate the existing campus and lease building space to Purdue. Earlier this month, Purdue announced plans to build a 248,000-square-foot mixed-use building near West Street and Michigan Street. The building is located where there is now a parking lot, will include classrooms, dining areas, laboratories and student residences. Construction is expected to begin in February 2025 and be completed in May 2027. The estimated total cost of the project is $187 million.
