MINNEAPOLIS – Many Americans will be off work and out of school on Memorial Day, a federal holiday honoring fallen U.S. service members.

Here’s a look at which places you can expect to find open in the Twin Cities, and which ones will be taking the day off.

What is open on Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a big sales day, so most major stores and restaurants are open. However, many may have limited shopping hours. The biggest exception to that rule is Costco, which is closed on Mondays.

A number of small, local entrepreneurs will remain open on Monday. It is best to check the opening hours of these businesses before going there.

Most movie theaters are also open, as Memorial Day weekend is typically a big weekend for new releases.

Metro Transit trains and buses will be operational but will follow Sunday/holiday schedules.

However, the Northstar commuter train will only run for the Minnesota Twins game at Target Field.

What is closed on Memorial Day?

On Mondays the post offices are closed and there is no postal service. Many FedEx and UPS stores will also be closed.

All state, local and federal offices are also closed, as are banks, public schools, colleges and universities.

All financial markets are also closed for the holiday.
