NEW YORK– New York City is facing the the coldest weather we’ve seen in a whileand parts of New York and New Jersey could expect a white Christmas this week, with snow on the way.
The cold caused a First Alert Weather Day to start the day Monday, but temperatures will rise into the 20s in the afternoon. The maximum temperatures are around twenty degrees, but feel like the mid-twenties due to the wind chill.
Cloud cover is expected to increase overnight and late snow showers are possible well into the north and west of the city.
This Arctic air mass blew in the coldest temperatures the city has seen in all of 2024 and all of last winter. Highs will begin to gradually rise each day this week and return to the average by Friday.
Will there be a white Christmas this year?
Christmas Eve will likely start with some snow showers Tuesday morning, followed by clearer skies in the afternoon.
The chance of snow in New York City appears to be between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., when a half-inch of accumulation is possible.
Up to 1 to 2 inches is possible at higher elevations north and west of the city. The system is expected to produce a quick series of light showers, lasting two to three hours in one location.
An inch or more of accumulation on the ground is considered a white Christmas, so it will depend on what happens with afternoon temperatures.
Skies will likely clear and temperatures will rise above freezing, but parts of the area may still have some ground coverage Wednesday morning.
Christmas Day will bring a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the mid 30s.
The last time New York City saw a White Christmas was in 2009 and historically the chance in the city is only 11%.
