The White Sox found themselves on the wrong side of franchise history again on Wednesday night.

With a Crosstown loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the White Sox now own a 13-game losing streak. That skid ties the franchise record for their longest losing streak in a single season. The initial 13-match limit occurred in August 1924, almost 100 years ago.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t technically the longest losing streak in White Sox history. Not a single season, but the 1967-68 White Sox lost fifteen games between seasons. The 1967 White Sox ended their season with a five-game losing streak, while the following year’s South Siders lost their first ten games.

But in terms of a single-season losing streak, the 2024 White Sox are one game away from taking the cake.

In MLB history, eleven teams have lost thirteen straight games in the American League since 2000. The MLB record for consecutive losses in a single season is 23, set by the Phillies in 1961. The Orioles hold the American League record for consecutive losses. , with 21 games in a row canceled in 1988.

Given the dire state of the White Sox, Pedro Grifol’s status is inevitably called into question.

However, ahead of Wednesday’s game, he says speculation is brewing for a team mired in a historic losing streak.

“That’s part of the job. Right? I don’t focus on that. It’s part of the job,” Grifol said before Wednesday’s game. “We don’t win. So if you don’t win, the speculation goes up and up. It’s part of what we do. We’re signed up to win baseball games. And if you don’t, there’s always a possibility that there will be a change has been implemented.”
