White Sox ‘want to trade Garrett Crochet’ before MLB transfer deadline, says Bob Nightengale

White Sox’ plan to trade Garrett Crochet before the MLB trade deadline, according to Bob Nightengale who originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

A new report says the White Sox are “planning” to trade Garrett Crochet before this year’s MLB deadline. Bob Nightengale wrote in a column published Sunday that the White Sox were “quietly in brief contract extension talks” with the first-year starter, but they are not optimistic they will reach a deal with him.

“The White Sox have called 15 teams to express interest in Crochet, who makes just $800,000 and is under team control until 2026,” Nightengale wrote. “The X-factor for suitors will determine how much Crochet can help them in pennant season and October.”

Crochet hasn’t just set a new career high for innings pitched this season—he’s surpassed his total innings pitched in just 17 starts this year. In the 2020, 2021 and 2023 seasons (Crochet missed 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery), Crochet has pitched 73.0 innings. This year, he’s already at 94.1 innings.

Accordingly, the White Sox have devised a plan to reduce his innings during the second half of the season.

Nightengale reported that the Dodgers already made an offer for Crochet, but that the White Sox “quickly rejected” it.

“The White Sox have let teams know they are looking for young talent with tremendous potential,” Nightengale wrote.

Nightengale’s report does not address the nature of the contract extension talks between the White Sox and Crochet. We do not know what the White Sox offered, or what Crochet wanted.

The White Sox are expected to sell several players at the deadline, including Tommy Pham, Erick Fedde and Michael Kopech. Nightengale also shared an update for two other players.

“The White Sox have also had several teams contact them about center fielder Luis Robert Jr., but due to his struggles they are considering keeping him at least until the winter as he is under control until 2027.

“The White Sox are openly shopping outfielder Andrew Benintendi and would love to be released from his contract. He is still due nearly $50 million from 2025-2027.”

The MLB transfer deadline is July 30 at 5 p.m.
