Who owns the most Tesla shares – besides Elon Musk?

Even those who don’t keep a close eye on it Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) are certainly familiar with Elon Musk and the leadership position he occupies in the company’s operations. Musk is also the largest shareholder of Tesla stock.

However, that’s not to say there aren’t other individuals and institutions with significant positions in Tesla. Let’s take a look at some of the other major investors in Tesla stock.

A who’s who of Tesla shareholders

In terms of individual insider investors, the second largest Tesla shareholder after Elon Musk is his brother Kimbal Musk. While Elon Musk owned approximately 13% of Tesla shares as of December 31, Kimbal Musk owned 1,608,720 shares, representing approximately 0.05%, as of April 2024. Kimbal Musk has been a Tesla board member for the past twenty years and also sits on Tesla’s board of directors. another of his brother’s ventures, SpaceX.

Among institutional owners, Vanguard retains the top spot as the largest owner of Tesla stock, a position that dwarfs Kimbal Musk’s ownership stake. With 229,805,491 Tesla shares, Vanguard Group’s position represents more than 7.2% of Tesla shares outstanding. While not as sizable as Vanguard’s position, it’s worth noting Black rock is not far behind, owning about 5.9% of Tesla’s outstanding shares.

While the S&P500 is up more than 11%, while Tesla shares have tumbled about 27%. While many pessimists think Tesla’s best days are in the rearview mirror, there are plenty of others who believe the company will be able to transcend the rocky road it is currently on and regain its former glory.

Valid arguments can be made by both groups of investors, but whether the stock belongs in your own portfolio requires you to do your own due diligence and educate yourself on the company’s potential through a SWOT analysis.
