When are the polls open and closed in Michigan?

Polls in Michigan are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. If you are in line at 8 p.m., you can still vote.

Here’s everything you need to know if you head to the polls to vote today.

Vice President Kamala Harris, left, and former President Donald Trump, right.

What’s at stake on Election Day?

Whether you support the Democratic candidate for president, Vice President Kamala Harris, or the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, each promises a different future for the US and for Michigan.

To name just a few examples, Harris would defend women’s rights to make their own reproductive choices, while Trump says he would leave it up to individual states to decide these issues. Harris generally supports a gradual transition to electric vehicles in the auto industry, which Trump generally opposes. Trump is promising double-digit tariffs on foreign imports as a way to pressure foreign manufacturers to produce their products in the US. Harris says this would amount to a national sales tax that would hurt consumers. Trump promises mass deportations of undocumented migrants, which Harris opposes.

Also at stake:

  • Michigan’s choices for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives could make the difference in determining which of the two major political parties controls each chamber.

  • Control of the Michigan State House is also up for grabs and will influence the extent to which Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will be able to implement what remains of her agenda in the final two years of her term .

  • And Michigan’s choices for the state Supreme Court will determine whether Democratic nominees will maintain their current 4-3 majority on that influential body.

When will we know the full election results?

When polls close at 8 p.m. local time, election officials can begin publishing unofficial election results. While results will start rolling in once the polls close, the outcome of any race may not be clear for a while. It depends on how close the race is and how many voters return their absentee ballots on Election Day. Absentee ballots take longer to process than in-person ballots due to the additional steps required after a voter returns their absentee ballot to verify and log the ballot, and then prepare it for tabulation.

In 2020, the Associated Press — which follows races across the U.S. — was unable to call President Joe Biden the winner of Michigan until Wednesday at 5:56 p.m. ET, the day after the Nov. 3, 2020, election. The AP called races before all votes were counted based on an analysis of votes already reported and other election data. The Free Press relies on the calls of the AP.
