Wild Mason stats show how much the 49ers leaned on the Jets’ broken defense originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

An incredible stat from Jordan Mason shows just how thoroughly the 49ers running back tore through the New York Jets defense Monday night at Levi’s Stadium.

Mason led the NFL in Week 1 with 13 forced missed tackles, five more than the nearest ball carrier, according to Next Gen Stats’ new Tackle Probability model.

With San Francisco superstar Christian McCaffrey out, Mason effortlessly stepped into the starting role, crushing New York’s defense for 28 carries, 147 yards and one touchdown.

Mason’s performance was crucial to San Francisco’s convincing 32-19 victory over the Jets, with the 49ers dominating on both ends of the court.

The undrafted running back appeared to be completely comfortable in coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, gaining ground on his own for most of the game.

With McCaffrey’s progress unclear as he recovers from Achilles tendonitis, Mason figures to be a key player for San Francisco, which plays the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2.
