Wilkes-University kicks off its 77th annual spring commencement

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local university held its annual spring ceremonies, minus the pro-Palestinian protests that some other colleges have experienced. Wilkes-University handed out more than 700 degrees.

These Wilkes University graduates received their degrees in a world of much uncertainty and chaos.

Grads 28/22 News spoke with them and says they hope they can continue to serve the “real world” in a positive way.

Cheers and applause filled the Mchale athletics center as Wilkes University students walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. This ceremony, unlike some others at the national level, was not disrupted by protests over the war between Israel and Hamas.

“While it is important to recognize what is happening in the world, it is also important to recognize all the achievements we have all made,” said Wilkes University graduate John Hannaway.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 2023, Hannaway earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish on Saturday. He wants to obtain a doctorate in pharmacy in 2025.

“These three classes that I have been a part of have really shown a lot of courage to endure this pandemic and all these things going on in the world and strive for the highest through their education, so we must focus on the hard work and dedication these students have put in,” Hannaway explained.

Morganne Seitz, another pharmacy major, will aim to earn her doctorate in two years. She wants to help a sector in need.

“The fact that we’re in pharmacy hopefully has some impact on the healthcare community and can actually just serve people in that area. This is what we came here for, so it’s really something to look forward to and celebrate,” said Seitz.

Patsy Sapolis cheered on her granddaughter, a nursing graduate whose role will be crucial in filling a global shortage problem.

“It’s the most important job and I hope she continues what she’s going for and learning as she nurses and cares for patients. It’s what you do while they’re here,” Sapolis added.

Whether these colonels earn advanced degrees or enter the workforce in 2024, there is one thing many hope they will achieve more than anything else.

“Just like everyone said in their speeches: to gain a lot of empathy,” Sapolis continued.

This marked the 77th spring commencement in Wilkes University history.
