Jefferson County Public Schools students will return from winter break Monday, just in time for a winter storm that meteorologists say will bring snow, sleet and freezing rain to Louisville.
JCPS spokesperson Carolyn Callahan said the district is unsure whether weather conditions will cause the first day of classes after the break to be canceled, although district officials will closely monitor weather forecasts this weekend and make a decision before 5 a.m. Monday.
Ahead of the storm, the National Weather Service Louisville issued a Winter Storm Watch, which goes into effect Saturday evening and ends Monday afternoon.
According to the bulletin, parts of central Kentucky and southern Indiana, including Louisville, could accumulate more than 4 inches of snow and sleet and more than 4 inches of ice.
According to the National Weather Service, travel is expected to be impacted as snow and ice accumulations could make for slippery roads. Power outages due to snow and ice buildup on trees and power lines are also a possibility, officials said.
Officials have urged residents in areas expected to be affected to prepare for the storm.
