What would be your top priority if elected?

My top priority is to improve the reading and math skills of all students, including students with different learning needs. The key to this is supporting and retaining excellent teachers in our school system.

What specific strategies would you promote to improve the academic performance of Wake County students?

I support improving our work in early literacy through evidence-based approaches such as LETRS and the use of high-dose tutoring programs. I would advocate for a thorough overhaul of our math curriculum and ensure it meets the learning needs of our students. I would broaden career and technical education offerings to prepare students who want to seek employment after graduation.

How should Wake County respond to the Biden administration’s new Title IX rules regarding transgender students?

WCPSS should have postponed the changes to its discrimination policy on the grounds that the new Title IX rules have been challenged in courts across the country, and that a temporary ban is in effect at many of our schools. Title IX regulations were created to protect young women from discrimination. Today’s changes actually weaken the original intent to protect women and put them at greater risk of harm and unfair practices.

Do you think the Legislature should fund approximately $500 million for private school vouchers through the Opportunity Scholarship program? Why or why not?

Parents understand that every child has different learning needs. The Opportunity Scholarship program provides an avenue for those who need an alternative to public schools but cannot afford that option. The role of the WCPSS School Board is to ensure that public schools provide the best option for our community.

What is your opinion on installing gun detectors in every school as a security measure?

I am not opposed to a weapons detection system if it can be practically implemented and if it is part of a multi-strategic approach. We cannot rely solely on this one security measure. This would only give us a false sense of security.
