A South Carolina woman didn’t let her failure to win previous lottery jackpots stop her from participating in a second chance event. Her determination paid off big time: $1 million, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release.
According to the publication, the Fort Mill resident won the seven-figure grand prize in the $1,000,000 Riches Second-Chance Promotion.
The woman discovered in an email that her ticket was the one selected from more than 800,000 entries, officials said.
“I read it twice and yelled at my husband to read it,” the winner said in the press release. “I was jumping up and down screaming.”
The drawing took place on May 9 and according to the lottery website, the $1 million jackpot was the only prize awarded. Scratch cards submitted after August 22, 2023 were eligible for the lottery game.
It was a subtle sign that gave her the motivation to submit her previous loss ticket for the second chance event, officials said.
The woman said she happened to notice a small triangle in the corner of one of her tickets, indicating it was possible to enter for another chance to win, the release said. After some investigation, the woman joined the Lottery’s Players’ Club and entered the ticket, as well as the others she subsequently purchased, officials said.
Despite the big payday, the woman joked that she was still going to do household chores.
“I still have laundry to do,” she said.
The winner has committed to making one purchase with her new windfall.
“I want to handle it financially responsibly. My only splurge is that I lost my engagement ring and I allowed myself to replace it,” she said.
The winner is allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of 11 states – along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia – where lottery winners can remain anonymous. .
