November 23 – Bluefield – Weather advisories reminding the public of increased snow and wind gusts, possibly as high as 45 mph, remain in effect today until 7 p.m. for much of the Southern West Virginia and Southwest Virginia region.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia has issued a winter weather advisory for Mercer, Monroe and eastern Greenbrier counties and for Tazewell County, Virginia, which remains in effect today until 7 p.m. Forecasters say another two inches of snow is possible until tonight. A minimum of 28 degrees was forecast for Friday evening, making spots of icy conditions possible on Saturday morning.
Mercer, Monroe and Greenbrier counties, as well as Tazewell, Bland, Giles and Wythe counties in Virginia, were issued a wind advisory that continued until 6 a.m. today. Wind speeds of 15 to 25 km/h and gusts of up to 50 km/h were forecast. The weather service warned that trees and tree limbs weakened by Hurricane Helene could still fall, causing power outages and other hazards.
In Charleston, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory that will remain in effect for Raleigh and Fayette counties today until 7 p.m. Up to 5 centimeters of snow could still fall, along with wind gusts of up to 60 km/h.
Mercer County could see between 1 and 2 inches of snow west of Interstate 77, said weather service meteorologist Will Perry in Blacksburg, Virginia.
“There is a lot more snow in the Snowshoe, W.Va. area by over a foot,” Perry said. “They let the wind flow come straight from the Great Lakes.”
The strongest winds in Mercer County were expected between 7 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. today with gusts between 55 and 70 mph, Perry said.
“And (today) you normally have winds of 10 to 25 km per hour and gusts of maybe 20 to 40 km per hour,” he said.
