A woman accused of pointing a BB gun into a crowd of people gathered at a “Porchfest” event in Wakefield over the weekend will appear in court on Monday.
Brigid Macdonough, 42, will appear in Malden District Court on suspicion of assault with a dangerous weapon, according to Wakefield police.
Macdonough had the gun sticking out of the window of her car as she drove a gray Subaru through crowds in the city’s Greenwood neighborhood Saturday afternoon, police said.
Parents and children were lined up on Greenwood Avenue when they saw the car speed past several times. A man tried to tell the woman that she could have hurt someone.
Witnesses told police the woman pulled out what appeared to be a Red Ryder BB gun and pointed it at the crowd as she drove by. Some families had to leave because they were so upset, calling it a very disturbing situation.
“You could tell some of the parents were visibly shocked from the moment I did that,” one father recalled. “My kids are 7 and 6, so they were crying. They were like, ‘Why is a woman pointing a gun at us?'”
Brandon Volkenant, from Wakefield, also noted: “Not only was her driving really dangerous, but this kind of aggressive threatening behaviour. Parents had had enough.”
Wakefield police said they were able to locate and arrest the woman within a few hours. In an update Monday, police said: “A family member of the suspect voluntarily surrendered the weapon. It was indeed a BB gun.”
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Wakefield Police at 781-245-1212.
