CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman died Thursday morning after a head-on collision with a school bus in Crown Point, Indiana.
About 8:30 a.m. Thursday, a school bus was traveling westbound on the 3300 block of 133rd Avenue in unincorporated Crown Point when it veered off the road and struck a mailbox, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. The driver then overcorrected to the left into oncoming traffic, where the bus collided with a Ford Edge SUV.
The driver of the SUV, 53-year-old Lisa Smith, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon. according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
According to the sheriff’s office, the bus driver and a bus monitor were the only people on board the school bus at the time. The bus driver was taken to hospital for evaluation and the monitor was not injured.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
