A woman shot near downtown Durham late Sunday night died in hospital, police said.
It happened in the 900 block of Fayetteville Street around 11:48 p.m.
ABC11, the newsgathering partner of The News & Observer, said the woman was shot outside Jack’s In and Out Mart, across the street from the Phoenix Square shopping center and just south of the Durham Freeway.
Officers found the woman with a gunshot wound. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to police statistics, as of October 12, 182 people had been shot in Durham this year, 25 of them fatally.
That’s down from 32 fatal shootings at the same time in each of the previous two years, the statistics show.
Police are still investigating Sunday’s shooting and have not released the woman’s name or suspect information.
