Worcester announces the winners of its ‘name a snow plow’ competition

WORCESTER – No, that’s not a misprint on one of Worcester’s newest snow plows. If you’re braving the elements to drive through town during a snowstorm, you might see something that forces a double take, but the truth is that yes, that snow plow is actually Snow More Mr. Ice Guy is called.

Worcester announced the four winners of its ‘name a snow plow’ competition on Wednesday, just in time for possible snowfall this weekend. The competition asked Worcester Public School classes to come up with names, including puns, for the four new snow plows the city purchased this winter season.

The winning names are as follows:

  • Scoop Dogg (Stephanie Trainor’s sixth grade, Francis J. McGrath Elementary School)

  • Sleetwood Mac (Victoria Alexander’s K-2 SAIL class, Norrback Avenue School)

  • William Scrapespeare (Aimee Kewley’s Grade 9-12 Theater Magnet Class, Burncoat High School)

  • Snow more Mr. Ice Guy (Sydney Lamothe’s Advisory Class 9-10, University Park Campus School)

The idea came from other institutions, such as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which has held a competition in recent years (this year’s winners included Taylor Drift and C-3P Snow).

Stephanie Trainor’s sixth grade class at Francis J. McGrath Elementary School was an award winner for its name suggestion “Scoop Dogg.”

“Congratulations to our Worcester Public School students on a great competition,” City Manager Eric D. Batista said in a news release. “Your enthusiasm and the imaginative names you submitted were inspiring to see. We thank the public for your involvement in this fun campaign and selecting excellent winners. We are pleased that four of our most visible snow plow trucks have now been named and showcase the creativity of our students.”

The winning classes will receive merchandise and apparel from Worcester Public Works, as well as a photo with their winning trucks. Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Rachel Monárrez said the contest is a fun way to test English skills and creativity.

“Our scientists at Worcester Public Schools always impress with their creativity and humor,” said Monárrez. “The winning snowplow names are not only clever, but also a fun way to participate in English language arts lessons. It’s great to see the imaginations of our scientists working while bringing laughter and joy to our community.”
