Would-be robber fatally shot during struggle for his gun, police say

A man was killed Saturday afternoon during a struggle over his gun after trying to rob someone in the New City neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

A 43-year-old man was working outside in the 1500 block of West Garfield Boulevard just before 3 p.m. when an unknown man approached him on foot, pulled out a gun and demanded his property, police said.

A struggle then ensued over the weapon, during which the suspected armed robber suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition but later died. His identity has not yet been released.

Police say no one has been arrested and they are investigating the shooting.
