The USMNT collapsed of the Copa América on Monday with a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

Brief summary: The US was the better team for the first 30 minutes, but as is often the case under head coach Gregg Berhalter, they couldn’t score.

  • Uruguayan Mathías Olivera found the net in the 66th minute. He appeared to be offside, but video footage confirmed he was offside by a few centimetres.

  • Panama, playing at the same time, defeated Bolivia 3-1, sending the Americans into a distant third place and into elimination.

From Henry Bushnell of Yahoo Sports:

In the weeks before, many questions had been asked about the expectations and standards for the Copa. From the outside, it was assumed that a place in the quarter-finals would be acceptable and a semi-final successful, but some players went a step further: why not just try to win it?

Few seemed to even consider failing in the group stage. It was so far beneath the USMNT’s seemingly inflated sense of self-worth. And it would so clearly be a colossal disappointment.

But it happened, and now all eyes will be on what happens next. They will be on US Soccer’s sporting director Matt Crocker, and on Berhalter. A majority of fans and pundits now seem to agree that he should be fired. Will that happen? And if so, who will replace him? And if not, how will he and the USMNT respond?

A team made up mostly of under-23s will head to the Olympics in Paris later this month. But for the entire USMNT, the next 18 months will be relatively barren. There will be monotonous, low-profile friendlies. There will be exhausting regional competitions.

This Copa América affair will play a major role for everyone, because this tournament was supposed to take the program to a higher level; it was the stepping stone to the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Instead, the US will enter 2026 with virtually no evidence that it can compete and compete with the elite of international soccer.

🥇 Noah Lyles aims for unprecedented four gold medals

Only four men* have ever completed the sprint treble in one Olympics, winning the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. If Noah Lyles has his way, he will have a chance to complete an unprecedented quad.

In search of history: Lyles has already secured a shot at the treble by winning the 100m and 200m at the US Trials last week, and he will likely lead the 4x100m relay. The question is whether USA Track & Field will select him for the 4×400 relay pool, as he has requested.

  • “I haven’t started negotiations yet,” Lyles said of the talks with the national sports governing body.

  • “Let’s just say it’s going to be tough. But I’m going to let them know that I’m available and I’m ready to go.”

What are his chances? Well, he only completed the triple victory at the World Championships a year ago and he’s in excellent form at the moment: his winning time in the 200 meters was 19.53 seconds – the fastest time in the world this year and a new American record for the Trials – and his 9.83 in the 100 meters was a personal best.

  • And while he doesn’t run the 400 meters that often, he was part of the relay team that won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships this spring, where he ran the fastest third of all competitors.

  • “I support him 100% [getting picked]”, said former NCAA indoor 400m champion Noah Williams.

*The four winners of the triple prize: Usain Bolt (London 2012, Rio 2016), Carl Lewis (Los Angeles 1984), Bobby Morrow (Melbourne 1956) and Jesse Owens (Munich 1936).
