Yankees’ Gleyber Torres Benched After Single Error Against Blue Jays

Gleyber Torres left Friday night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth inning and the decision appears to have been disciplinary action by the Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Trailing 3-2 and with one out in the second inning, the second baseman lined a ball over the left-field wall. It could easily have been a double had he come out of the box.

Torres, however, did not sprint out of the gate admiring the ball he hit, possibly thinking it would be a home run. The ball, which traveled 363 feet and came off the bat at 111 mph, stayed in the stadium, and Torres was stuck on first base with a long single.

Later in the inning, Anthony Volpe hit a double down the left-field line, but instead of easily scoring, which would have tied the score and kept the inning going, Torres attempted to score from first base and was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.

As the last out, Torres did not return to the dugout and simply returned to his position at second base to begin the third. Boone would not let the error that cost New York a run go unpunished, however, as he was seen talking to Torres between innings before Torres was eventually removed from the game.

The timing of the move left people confused as to whether the decision was disciplinary or injury related. Aside from sliding home in the second period and getting tagged out, Torres made a diving move up the middle in the third period that could have caused injury.

However, the action did appear to be a disciplinary measure and did not occur immediately after the blunder, as Torres did not return to the dugout after it happened.

Oswaldo Cabrera came on as a replacement for Torres, who finished 1-on-1 in seventh place in the lineup.
