The Yankees made their first move in the 2024-25 offseason and it was obvious. The team exercised their club option to acquire RHP Lucas Weaver back to the team.

Weaver was a revelation for the Yankees in 2024. In 62 games, he pitched to an ERA of 2.89 and a WHIP of 0.93, while converting four saves. Most of that came as a middle reliever, but once the team moved Clay Holmes from his closer role, the 31-year-old Weaver won the job.

The right-hander’s dominance from the regular season carried over to the postseason, where he pitched in 12 of the Yankees’ 14 playoff games. In that span, he pitched to an ERA of 1.76 – allowing just three runs in 15.1 innings pitched – and a WHIP of 0.56. He also struck out 16 batters while converting four saves.

According to Spotrac, Weaver’s salary will be approximately $2.5 million in 2024.

Holmes became a free agent when the 2024 season ended, so it’s unclear what the Yankees will do about their new closer. But bringing Weaver back means they have someone who can close games for them next season, whether they re-sign Holmes or bring in another reliever this offseason.
