SAN RAMON, California. – A driver, reportedly under the influence of drugs, was involved in a two-vehicle crash before barricading themselves in their vehicle in San Ramon on Saturday, California Highway Patrol said.
San Ramon police initially said this was an armed and barricaded individual on southbound Interstate 680. CHP said the driver was taken into custody and no weapon was located or ever seen.
“When firefighters responded to the man driving a 2012 Mini Cooper, he barricaded himself in the car and said he had a gun,” Officer Tyler Hahn said.
Minor injuries have been reported in connection with this incident.
CHP – Dublin first issued a warning for a crash and “police activity” on I-680 southbound at Bollinger Canyon Road at 5:53 p.m.
Shortly after 6 p.m., San Ramon Police warned the public of a road closure in the area of San Ramon Valley Road south of Bollinger Canyon due to a subject on I-680 southbound. Both the roadway and highway were closed while CHP responded to the situation.
The traffic incident report shows a Mini Cooper and other vehicles were involved. The Mini Cooper almost hit a tree and drove into bushes on the right shoulder of the roadway.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m., police said CHP apprehended the person and that San Ramon Valley Boulevard had reopened and the highway would reopen shortly after.
The San Ramon police chief said his department had dispatched an armored rescue vehicle to the incident. Once announcements were made over the vehicle’s public address system, Chief Denton Carlson said, “The suspect exited his vehicle and was taken into custody by CHP Dublin personnel.”
Carlson thanked his department for their “excellent response.”
It is not clear why the person barricaded himself in his vehicle. Officials did not say whether the person in custody has been charged or where he is being held.
Further details were not immediately available.
