October was the second least deadly month, after February, when there were four victims. April remains the most violent month of 2024 with 16 victims.
Multiple gunshot or stab wounds typically indicate an emotional attack or interpersonal violence, which Jackson said Police Chief Wade currently accounts for about 60% of homicides in Jackson. Interpersonal violence involves personal disputes between romantic partners, family members, or friends that can be fatal.
All of the October murder victims were black men, with the youngest being 20 years old and the oldest being 45 years old. On November 13, the police identified and/or arrested suspects in four of the five murder cases. Three of the suspects are black men and one is a black woman.
Wade, who called for peace in the city, told the Clarion Ledger that the department will not stand idly by while crime “plagues” the community. Wade said police have implemented at least nine different “strategic approaches” to help reduce crime, starting with JPD being “proactive and not reactive” to criminal activity.
“We are not focused on putting anyone in jail this weekend,” Wade said. “We want to get people who commit these criminal crimes out of our city and our communities so that we can move forward with every development and prosperity that impacts the quality of life for our citizens.”
By the end of October, there had been a total of 98 homicides in Jackson. Capitol Police investigated six cases, JPD investigated 91 cases and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation investigated one case.

Antonio Wilson

Jackson police said Antonio Wilson, 20, was fatally shot on Medgar Evers Boulevard on Oct. 3 after a dispute with 44-year-old Joseph Greenfield, the suspect. According to police, Wilson and Greenfield got into an argument around 6 p.m. that day. Police said Wilson was in a vehicle at the time of the altercation and Greenfield was on foot. Greenfield allegedly walked into and shot Wilson’s car, which was hit by gunfire “several times.” After the shooting, Wilson reportedly managed to drive to a gas station in the 6700 block of Medgar Evers Boulevard, where he died from his injuries.

Police arrested Greenfield, who is charged with murder, in connection with the shooting. Court records show that in the area of Northside Drive near Obannon Drive, Greenfield allegedly shot and killed Wilson by “shooting him in the head with a firearm of unknown caliber.”

Tremaine Curry

Jackson police said officers found Tremaine Curry, 42, dead around 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the 700 block of West McDowell Road. Police said Curry was shot multiple times at this location and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police arrested Emmanuel Jaynes, 25, in connection with the case. Jaynes is charged with murder in connection with this case.

Court records show Jaynes was also charged with the murder of 37-year-old Robert Horton after he allegedly robbed and shot Horton multiple times on September 15 in the 3200 block of Capitol Street.
Christopher Borras

Jackson police said Christopher Borras, 22, was fatally stabbed “multiple times” with a large knife by a woman on Oct. 13 during an altercation at the McDonald’s location at Northside Drive and Suspension Moss Road. Borras worked at McDonald’s.

Police identified the woman as 22-year-old Destiny Gibson, who is charged with murder in connection with the case. Gibson allegedly jumped on the victim and stabbed a knife into his chest. Borras was having lunch at the time, police said.

According to police, a customer in the store witnessed the crime. Investigators say the witness “subdued” Gibson until police arrived. In Gibson’s booking photo, it appeared she had the victim’s blood on her face. Gibson appeared in court on October 14 and received a $2 million bond.

During Gibson’s first appearance, a municipal judge wrote on papers filed in the lawsuits on Oct. 17: “She stabbed a random McDonald’s employee to death and stabbed a fellow inmate in jail with a spoon this morning.” The judge also wrote that Gibson is “homeless.”

It is not known whether Gibson brought the knife onto the restaurant’s premises or whether Gibson retrieved the knife from the restaurant’s kitchen.

Jackson police said a 45-year-old black man was shot and killed Oct. 24 at a South Jackson home in the 100 block of Greenway Court near McDowell Road. Police said officers were called to the scene around noon where they said a young woman found the victim’s body. According to police, the man did not live in the home.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said a large number of bullets were fired based on the damage inside the home and wounds on the victim’s body. Police have identified Roddrick Raheem Jones, 29, as a person of interest. Police are actively looking for Jones.

Jones was previously held at the Hinds County Detention Center in 2017 for allegedly killing one person and injuring two others while wearing a Jason Voorhees mask from the “Friday the 13th” film series.

Deputy Chief Sequerna Banks said the body of 21-year-old Omar Drake was found Oct. 29 near the railroad tracks on North State Street. Drake was dead at the scene. Police ruled Drake’s death a homicide, adding that the victim had “persistent trauma to his upper body.” No suspect information was released on November 13.
