The “King Tides” are on their way!

The next King Tide event returns to the Bay Area from November 15-17.

King Tides, also called Spring Tides, are naturally occurring and predictable events that revolve around the alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth.

“Tides are long-lasting waves that roll around the planet as the ocean is “pulled” back and forth by the gravity of the moon and sun as these bodies interact with Earth in their monthly and annual orbits,” NOAA said. .

Tides are typically higher than normal during a new or full moon and when the moon is closest to Earth, known as perigee.

This month, the Full Beaver Moon coincides with perigee, creating the King Tide event.

This will create some of the highest and lowest tides of the year, with an even more dramatic coastline. When King Tides occur during floods or storms, water levels can rise higher and cause extensive damage to the coastline and coastal properties.

Although King Tides are not directly affected by climate change, scientists study these King Tide events to help visualize future sea level rise and its impact on coastal communities.

Low tide makes for great times to explore tide pools that are only exposed a few times a year during these King Tide events.

Visit NOAA’s website to find the timing of the tides closest to you. Major tide pool locations in the Bay Area can also be found on the NOAA site.
