A preliminary magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck near Monterey Park on Monday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.
It struck at 10:04 a.m. near the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, at a depth of 9.8 kilometers or 6 miles.
The USGS shows it could have been felt from Compton to Glendale and from West Hollywood to Altadena.
A number of fairly significant earthquakes have occurred in this area of Los Angeles County during the summer months. An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck about 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Highland Park in August and June, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 hitting an epicenter in Pasadena.
