A Los Angeles woman who was called into work on her day off left a millionaire that same day, all thanks to a lucky lottery scratch ticket.
Rebecca Gonzalez was not scheduled to be on the clock on September 2, but was hired at Walmart even though she had already made plans for that day.
“It was Labor Day,” Gonzalez said in a statement through the California Lottery. “They only needed me for three hours. Obviously I wanted to be home with my family because we had plans to have a barbecue.”
Still, she picked up the phone and showed up for work, not knowing how valuable that service would ultimately be. Gonzalez bought the Single Double Triple scratcher from the California Lottery kiosk when she left work and immediately became a millionaire.
She told the lottery she used her winnings to pay off her debts and purchase a new home. Despite the win, she plans to continue working at Walmart.
Until this week, Gonzalez had told only one person about her win: the manager who asked her to stay late during the holiday shift.
