A “pushing and shoving match” on Main Street in Hyannis in 2022 that led to a man being stabbed ended with a jury conviction in Barnstable Superior Court in early November.
Mashpee resident Kenneth Chisholm was found guilty of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on Nov. 8 in connection with the stabbing, according to court records.
The jury reached its verdict about two hours into a two-day trial. The jury found Chisholm not guilty of armed assault with intent to murder.
Judge Mark Gildea sentenced Chisholm to a minimum of four and a maximum of five years at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster. He was given credit for the 136 days he had already spent in custody.
Chisholm was 34 at the time of the incident on April 2, 2022.
Siblings from Cape Cod
Chisholm and his younger brother, Denzel Chisholm, pleaded guilty in 2010 to trafficking in oxycodone and illegally possessing guns and ammunition. They were each sentenced to five to seven years in state prison.
Denzel Chisholm was later sentenced in 2017 to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to murder in the stabbing and shooting death of Christine Ferreira in September 2015. His sister, Shannelle Chisholm, who was also charged with murder, left Barnstable Superior Court without jail time after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge.
Denzel Chisholm was known as the leader of the Nauti Block street gang, which was dismantled in April 2016. Many of the members grew up around Nautical Road in Hyannis.
Kenneth Chisholm wrote a handful of novels featuring gang and drug dealer characters. The novels were published between 2015 and 2017 and sold on Amazon.
Stabbing on Main Street in 2022
The stabbing reportedly occurred near the intersection of Old Colony Road and Main Street in Hyannis shortly after 1 a.m. on April 2, 2022.
When police arrived, they found a group of three people standing over a man who was lying on the ground suffering from visible stab wounds. Hyannis Fire and Rescue took the victim – identified as a then 28-year-old Yarmouth man – to Cape Cod Hospital.
He was later taken via medical rescue helicopter to Boston Medical Center, where he underwent at least two surgeries, including one for a punctured lung, according to previous Times reporting.
Surveillance video showed the victim talking to Kenneth Chisholm outside Finn’s Tap House at 1:03 a.m. when the standoff turned into a “push and shove match,” a Barnstable police detective testified during a endangerment hearing in 2022.
The victim appeared to defensively kick Chisholm in the stomach, Barnstable Det. Edward Cronin said in 2022, and then Chisholm took a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in the chest.
The victim then ran south toward Main Street, while Chisholm walked to the parking lot on North Street, according to Cronin.
After Kenneth Chisholm’s trial in November
“Our office recognizes that it can be challenging for a victim in an assault case to come forward and relive the event through testimony,” the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office said through a spokesperson. “We appreciate both the victim’s courage in coming forward and the investigation conducted by the Barnstable Police Department.”
Ellen Garnett, Kenneth Chisholm’s attorney, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Chisholm was also notified of his right to appeal to the Appellate Division of the Superior Court within 10 days and to the Court of Appeals within 30 days.
