The fourth time’s a charm. At least, that’s what it was for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Michael Keaton and musical guest Billie Eilish, both of whom returned as hosts Saturday evening live for their fourth performance.
Keaton, who was later fully joined by Andy Samberg and Mikey Day Beetle juice getups, things kicked things off with a nostalgic opening monologue that recalled his early days at NBC.
“I was a PA Mister Rogers’ Neighborhoodthe actor said during his opening monologue. “In the seventies, you know, SNL And Mister Rogers [had] many more similarities than you would think. Lots of dolls. Tons of cocaine.”
The show opened with Maya Rudolph returning as Vice President Kamala Harris, along with Alec Baldwin making a surprise appearance as Fox News host Bret Baier, to parody Harris’ much-discussed interview on the conservative network on October 16.
James Austin Johnson also returned as Donald Trump, who mocked the former president’s recent Fox News town hall. Additionally, Dana Carvey made a comeback as President Biden, with an unusual rant to spare Joker: Folie à Deux.
A ‘very subdued, very conscious’ cold open
Baldwin came out swinging in his portrayal of Baier – his first return to the show since he was fired Rust involuntary manslaughter case in July.
“Good evening, I’m Brett Baier, and to clear the air, yes, I look like someone made a businessman in Minecraft,” he joked.
During the cold open, Baldwin and Rudolph recreated the real Baier and Harris’ combative interview last week, with Baldwin filling the segment with brutal interruptions and loaded questions.
When accused of trying to create a viral meme moment, Rudolph said, “Oh, please. I’m not looking for a viral moment,” and then quickly turned to a side camera with a TikTok filter effect.
“See how I don’t let men interrupt my answers? Very understated, very conscious,” she said, a reference to internet personality Jools LeBron’s viral TikTok video.
Moments later, she said, “I’m here to reach across the aisle,” before looking back at the TikTok filter and adding, “Hundreds of Republicans supported me because — In ‘da clurb, we all fam .’
At another point in the mock interview, Baldwin-as-Baier played a clip of Johnson’s Trump dancing to “YMCA,” a parody of a recent town hall event where the former president reportedly swayed to music for 39 minutes after several audience members fainted.
“You see, this election is about contrast,” Rudolph said. ‘At my meetings there are Beyoncé and Joy and toilets. He does not pay for the buses at his meetings. And hundreds of elderly people have to walk back to their cars, ten kilometers through the desert, like an Old Testament Fyre Festival.’
