CHICAGO (CBS) – One man is dead and a food vendor was injured after a shootout during an attempted robbery Friday evening on the city’s West Side.
The shooting happened in the 300 block of South Central Avenue in the Austin neighborhood just before 9 p.m.
Chicago police said the seller, a 35-year-old man, was approached by a 30-year-old man and a brief struggle ensued. The man and the seller, who holds a concealed carry permit, both pulled out a firearm and exchanged gunfire.
The Chicago Fire Department arrived on scene and treated both men.
The man was shot multiple times in the body and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. The seller was hit in the right arm and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
Relatives of the seller said he has been serving the community for nearly a decade and that he acted in self-defense.
“We’re very confused as to why this would happen to him, but we understand it’s the holidays and people do some very strange things to get money,” said Jacquetta Jones.
Two firearms were found at the scene.
Area Four detectives are investigating.
