The victim of the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania has been identified as a loving father and husband who shielded his family from gunfire.

Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while protecting his wife and daughters, his family said, calling “this horrific nightmare … our painful reality.”

“The PA Trump Rally took the life of my brother, Corey Comperatore. Hatred for one man took the life of the man we love most. He was a hero who protected his daughters. His wife and daughters have been through the unthinkable and unimaginable,” Dawn Comperatore Schafer posted on Facebook. “My little brother just turned 50 and had so much to go through. Hate knows no bounds and love knows no bounds.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said he ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Comperatore, whose wife called him a “girl dad” in a conversation with the governor.

“Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community and especially his family. Corey was an ardent supporter of the former president and was so happy to be in the community with him last night,” Shapiro said at a news conference. “Corey showed up last night to protect his family at this rally. Corey was the best of us. May his memory be a blessing.”

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Comperatore was the former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Photos and video show the disturbing moment gunfire broke out at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, as Trump addressed the crowd.

The FBI identified a 20-year-old from nearby Bethel Park as the suspect in the shooting. The suspect was killed by the Secret Service.
