Child trapped between 2 rocks for 10 hours rescued by New Hampshire firefighters

WINDSOR, NH – A child was rescued Sunday in Windsor, New Hampshire, after being trapped between two rocks for 10 hours.

Child stuck five feet deep

According to the Wediko School, the 11-year-old was exploring a rocky area on the Camp Wediko campus with an adult when he “fell between two boulders, sticks and debris,” the school said.

Faculty members attempted to free the child but were unable to do so and called 911. Hillsboro firefighters received the call just before 6 p.m. Sunday and found the child among the rocks around 4 or 5 p.m.

Manchester Fire said the student had “limited room to move his arms or legs” and the boulders were too large to move. Crews working through the night were able to dig a tunnel through the side of the rocks to reach the child’s legs.

He was lifted out of the boulders around 3:15 a.m. using “friction-reducing materials and a lubricant.” He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Manchester Fire said. The school said he was released Monday morning.

“We are extremely grateful to our staff for their quick, professional response and to the local emergency response teams for getting the student to safety. Ensuring the physical safety and emotional well-being of our students remains our highest priority at Wediko School,” Wediko School said in a statement.

The Wediko school

The Wediko School is a boarding school for high school and college boys who have “significant social-emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities.” The school also runs a 45-day camp on its lakefront campus for boys and girls ages eight through 18 who have “ADHD, anxiety, Asperger’s syndrome, and mood disorders.”

During the camp you can do archery, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and mountain biking. Social workers, psychologists and special education teachers are present.
