Chinese car companies want retaliatory tariffs on EU cars – reports

Chinese carmakers have reportedly urged Beijing to raise tariffs on cars with petrol engines imported from the EU, according to a Chinese newspaper report. The move is said to be a response to the EU’s new planned import tariffs that will apply to Chinese-made electric vehicles – which an investigation in Brussels has concluded benefit from anti-competitive subsidies.

Beijing’s response to the new EU tariffs is still being considered Global times reported that a Chinese auto industry insider suggested that China should consider raising the temporary tariff on imported cars with large-displacement engines. Such a move would have a direct impact on imported cars from Europe in the world’s largest market, especially for premium models (the German car industry is, unsurprisingly, expressing concerns about the new EU duties and the dangers of a tit-for- tat trade war between China and the European Union).

Reuters reported that at a meeting of car companies, the Chinese auto industry has called on the government to take strong countermeasures [to the EU China BEV tariffs] and suggested that positive consideration should be given to increasing China’s interim tariff on gasoline cars with large-displacement engines.

Sources also told the pro-Beijing Global times that relevant Chinese industries are gathering evidence as they plan to request anti-dumping investigations into certain EU pork and dairy products.

Chinese ministries and industry associations have sharply criticized the EU’s decision and vowed to take all necessary measures to defend the interests of Chinese companies. However, analysts also say that the Chinese want to avoid an escalation of trade tensions with Europe, which would harm key Chinese economic interests.
